Work has now started on the redevelopment of the "New Giraffe" phase 1, which is expected to be ready for opening in autumn 2019.
Giraffen has begun its redevelopment with the vision of moving from a shopping centre to a socially sustainable meeting place with experiences for the whole family.
The redevelopment is in full swing and the main focus of Phase 1 is now on connecting the two existing shopping streets with a new, modern and pleasant shopping street that begins and ends in squares with restaurants that will give the impression of an outdoor feeling with greenery and light.
In concrete terms, the redevelopment will improve the internal and external environment by creating a more welcoming atmosphere, with space for cafés, restaurants and shops.
For example, indoor areas will be refurbished with new finishes on the floor, ceiling and facade. Toilets and family rooms will be expanded. Several seating areas and niches will be created in the new shopping street to invite people to take a break. More sustainable and modern lighting will be added, like daylight.
Outside, the facades will be renovated and decorated with new cladding and vegetation. New entrances with new glass sections are being built and new signs are being put up. A new and pleasant outdoor square will be created with new seating, lighting and opportunities for trade and experiences.

The city of Kalmar is growing and the city's shopping centres need to reflect that growth. The Giraffe's location enables an extension of the offer in the city centre, and the property owner sees an opportunity to change the site to better meet the needs of the modern customer.
